Why Should I Feel Half a Woman?

Julie Phelan

Why should I feel half a woman?

When I care just as much as a mother,

when I yearn just the same as another

if I look at a new born child.

Why should I feel half a woman?

When I don't push a push-chair along,

when sleepless nights visit, helping prolong

the silence that keeps me awake.

Why should I feel half a woman?

With no child to instruct in the Torah,

when a child crying 'mama' is torture -

and breaking my heart into two.
